Shellholders are easy to collect one at a time. A new cartridge, a different press setup, or a replacement part enters the shop, and soon the drawer contains a mix of loose steel pieces, factory packaging, and mystery holders with worn markings. That arrangement works until it does not.
Before choosing an organizer, gather your shellholders and identify each one by the marking, manufacturer, and cartridge family it supports. Keep maker-specific holders distinct. Similar-looking shellholders from Hornady, RCBS, Lyman, and other systems may not share the same fit or intended use. For a mobile setup, retention matters more. A tray that works well in a stationary drawer may allow parts to shift during transport. For example, a pocket can identify the holder number first, followed by the compatible family you use most often. If one holder supports several cartridge types, list the family rather than trying to crowd every compatible cartridge onto a tiny label.
Color coding can help when you have a larger collection, but it should support printed labels rather than replace them. Colors fade from memory, especially when more than one person uses the bench. Clear text remains faster and more reliable.
How to Store Shellholders Neatly by Workflow
There are two sound ways to arrange a shellholder collection: numerical order or use order. Neither is universally better.
Numerical order makes sense for a broad collection, particularly when you frequently add new holders or work across many cartridge families. It is easy to audit, easy to label, and easy to find a holder when you know its number. Leave a few open pockets or spaces for future additions so the entire layout does not need to be rearranged later.
Use order is often better for a dedicated loading bench. Put your most common shellholders in the front row or nearest section of the drawer, then place less frequently used holders behind them. Some users prefer grouping by press, such as keeping holders for a particular single-stage press setup together. Others group by the cartridge families they load most often.
The trade-off is simple: numerical layouts are easier to manage as collections grow, while workflow layouts are faster during regular bench use. If you have enough space, combine both approaches. Keep the main tray in numerical order, then use a small, clearly labeled active-use section for the holders currently in rotation.
Keep Shellholders Clean Without Overhandling Them
Shellholders do not need complicated care, but they should not live under a layer of powder residue, brass shavings, oil, or general bench dust. Before returning one to storage, wipe away visible debris with a clean shop cloth and inspect it for obvious wear, burrs, or damage. Do not allow loose grit to accumulate in the pockets of an organizer.
Avoid soaking storage inserts or leaving them in areas exposed to excessive heat. Keep the organizer dry and away from corrosive chemicals. If you use protective oil on steel parts, use it sparingly and let excess oil come off before placing the holder back into a fitted cavity. Heavy oil attracts debris and transfers it to the organizer.
It also helps to separate shellholders from unrelated small parts. Decapping pins, bushings, spare screws, and press hardware may be similar in size, but mixing them into the same pockets adds confusion. Put shellholders close enough to the press that changing one does not require crossing the room, but not so close that they are exposed to constant clutter and accidental knocks.
